Luxury Vinyl Flooring: Why Is It Everywhere?

Luxury vinyl flooring has very little in common with the shiny sheet vinyl many of us remember. Today’s luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) can be remarkably convincing, which helps explain why we see them in so many remodeling projects.

Why homeowners like it

The appeal is pretty straightforward: it is durable, relatively easy to maintain, available in an enormous range of looks and well suited to rooms where moisture or everyday abuse can be an issue. That makes it especially useful in basements, mudrooms, laundry rooms and busy family spaces.

It can also be a practical choice for homes with kids and pets, where the floor needs to look good without becoming another thing everyone is afraid to use.

Not all LVP is created equal

“Luxury vinyl” describes a category, not a quality level. Products vary in overall thickness, wear layer, core construction, locking system, texture and installation requirements. Two floors that look almost identical on a display board can perform very differently once installed.

Pay attention to the manufacturer’s specifications and warranty rather than buying entirely on color or price. Also make sure the product is appropriate for the room and the subfloor beneath it.

The floor underneath still matters

Floating flooring can forgive some things, but it cannot fix a bad substrate. Uneven concrete, moisture problems, movement and poor preparation can all create trouble later. A good installation begins before the first plank clicks together.

Is it right for every room?

No flooring is. Real hardwood, tile, engineered wood and other materials all have places where they make more sense. But when durability, moisture resistance, maintenance and cost all matter, good-quality LVP or LVT can be a very sensible remodeling choice.
